Military manufacturing with MAG for rugged, lightweight results
Magnesium Injection Molding (MAG) for Rugged, Lightweight Military Applications
Showcasing yet another example of magnesium injection molding’s wide range of capabilities, Phillips-Medisize partnered with VT Miltope, a Vision Technology Systems company, to manufacture components for the VT Miltope MSD V2 – the most versatile and compact rugged-militarized laptop computer available.
Today, the VT Miltope MSD V2 computer stands as one of the most powerful and configurable portable computing systems available for military tactical operations.
Basic Training in Magnesium Alloy
Magnesium Alloy AZ91D provides designers and engineers with a powerful material and space-efficient design possibilities.
HIGH-STRENGTH – Stiffness, strength, and durability are maximized as magnesium components are 20-times stiffer than typical thermoplastics and display superior impact resistance.
LIGHTWEIGHT – With a material density of 0.065 lb/in3, magnesium compares favorably with most thermoplastics and offers a significant increase in mechanical properties.
THIN WALL – Magnesium parts are customarily molded with nominal wall thickness down to 0.020", providing high-strength precise moldings.
TIGHT TOLERANCE – Precision and complexity of designs increase with the use of magnesium.
EMI SHIELDING – Magnesium housings and enclosures are electrically conductive and provide effective EMI shielding without the use of fillers.
Rugged characteristics give VT Miltope MSD V2 the strength to withstand many environmental challenges including:
- Temperatures of -25˚ F to 149˚ F
- Solar radiation
- Shock and vibration
- High altitudes
- 10% to 95% humidity
- Driving rain
- Sand and dust
- Explosive atmospheres
- Salt fog
